Chesapeake is an independent city in the Commonwealth of Virginia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 222,209;[3] in 2013, the population was figured to be 232,977,[making it the third-most populous city in Virginia.
Chesapeake is included in the Virginia Beach Norfolk Newport News, VA-NC MSA. One of the cities in the South Hampton Roads, Chesapeake was organized in 1963 by voter referendums approval the governmental integration of the city of South Norfolk with the remnants of the former Norfolk County, which dated to 1691. The Great Dismal Swamp is a large swamp in the Ground Region of southeastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina, between Norfolk, Virginia, and Elizabeth City, North Carolina. It is located in parts of the southern Virginia independent cities of Chesapeake and Suffolk and northern North Carolina counties of Gates, Pasquotank, and Camden. Some estimates identify the size of the original swamp at over one million acres (4,000 km2), stretching from Norfolk, Virginia to Edenton, North Carolina.
It is a southern swamp, one of many along the Atlantic Ocean's great dismal swamp camping coast, admitting the Everglades and Big Cypress tree Swamp in Florida, the Swampland in Georgia, the Congaree Swamp of South Carolina, and some of the Carolinas bays in the Carolinas and Georgia.

Dismal Swamp State Park information and General Admission Fees
Dismal Swamp State Park is a North Carolina state park in Camden County, North Carolina in the United States. The park was created as a state natural area in 1974 with the help of The Nature Conservancy, and on July 28, 2007 the, NC General Assembly re-designated it as a state park. It opened to the public in 2008. This marked the first time that public access to Great Dismal Swamp was made possible in North Carolina. The park covers 14,432 acres (58.40 km2) of protected land on the North Carolina/Virginia border. Park offices are three miles (5 km) south of the border on U.S. Route 17 near South Mills. Features of the park include the canal which dismal swamp state park trail map is used regularly by boaters using the Intracoastal Waterway and several miles of hiking and dismal swamp canal fishing and biking trails.

Dismal Swamp Canal information and General Admission Fees
The Dismal Swamp Canal is settled along the eastern edge of the Great Dismal Swamp in Virginia and North Carolina in the United States. It is the oldest continually operating man-made canal in the United States, opened up in 1805. It is part of the Intracoastal Waterway, an inland route, which collimates the east coast and offers leghorns shelter from the Atlantic Ocean from Manchester Inlet, New Jersey, to Metropolis, Texas. The route runs through bays, lakes, rivers, streams, and canals, and includes the Intracoastal Waterway running from Norfolk, Virginia, to the Florida Keys.
